Questions to ask your doctor

It is important to discuss any questions or concerns with your physician before your surgery. Here are some examples of questions that you could ask your doctor.

  • What are the risks associated with my surgery?
  • What are the benefits associated with my surgery?
  • How long will I be in surgery?
  • What type of rehabilitation regimen is recommended? How long will I be in rehab?
  • Is it possible to use a biologic implant for my surgery?
  • Can I choose to have a biologic implant for my surgery?
  • What are the benefits of using an allograft implant? A xenograft implant? An autograft? A metal or synthetic implant? Are there disadvantages to using any of these materials?
  • Is there a chance of rejection? Will I have to take anti-rejection drugs if I receive a biologic implant?
  • Is it safe to use a biologic implant?
  • How are allografts or xenografts screened to ensure my safety?
  • What company processed my biologic implant? What are the differences between the choices of allograft and xenograft providers?
  • Does your allograft provider rely only on screening, testing and aseptic processing to ensure my safety, or do they use a validated sterilization method? How is the implant sterilized?
