Understanding Your Decision
Periprosthetic Fracture
Sometimes during or after a joint is repaired or replaced, or as a result of trauma, small fractures called periprosthetic fractures can occur. For example, periprosthetic fractures in the femur could occur during hip replacement. Your doctor may recommend that a biologic implant be used to treat this type of fracture.
Biologic implants are a natural alternative to synthetic and metal implants, and unlike synthetic and metal implants, biologic implants incorporate into the patient’s body.
Another choice surgeons have is an autograft, which takes tissue from one part of the body for transplantation to another part. Using a biologic implant eliminates the need for a second surgery site—avoiding additional pain, risk, and possible longer hospital stay.
It is important to discuss questions or concerns with your physician before your surgery.
